Confirming earlier rumors, Chevy announced at a recent media event for the Cruze Hatchback that a diesel powertrain is in the pipeline for the 2018 model year.The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel, already used in Europes Vauxhall Astra, will be available with both a six-speed manual and a new nine-speed automatic transmission.Its possible that with this powertrain the diesel-powered Cruze Hatch could break the 50-mpg highway mark, which would be a high bar to set for non-hybrids across the market.
